Haryana’s First Nuclear
Project Inaugurated
In an era where nuclear power is
the only alternative available to meet the energy demands of the ever-increasing
population, Haryana, under the leadership of Chief Minister Shri Bhupinder
Singh Hooda, gets its first nuclear power plant inaugurated. Prime Minister
Manmohan Singh laid the foundation of 2,800 Megawatt nuclear power plant in
Fatehabad district of Haryana. The project named as ‘Anu Vidyut Pariyojna’,
will cost approximately 23502 crore Rupees and will have four units of 700 MWS
each. These are Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) which will use natural
uranium as fuel and heavy water as coolant and moderator.
“Our government has laid a lot of
emphasis on the power sector. The power generation capacity enhancement in the
last 10 years is higher than what was achieved in the previous 55 years since
independence,” said PM Manmohan Singh after inauguration. The nuclear plant is
expected to accelerate the pace of development and generate more employment
opportunities for the locals.
The Nuclear Power Corporation of
India Limited (NPCIL) will build these reactors. NPCIL is the sole body responsible for
constructing and operating India's commercial nuclear power plants. The company
has 21 nuclear reactors in operation at seven
locations. The total installed capacity of these nuclear reactors is 5780
MWs. The initiative clearly depicts a
futuristic approach of the Hooda government that aims to capitalise well on the
most vital energy source capable of ensuring a more sustainable industrial
civilization.
